MUN Project Reflection
What is a Model United Nations?
,In this project our class had done a Model United Nations, which is where a class or group of students come together to solve a solution that the actual United Nations has to solve. With each student being assigned a country, that student has to research that country's position on the situation. Researching enough and writing resolutions, the students then go into a phase where they act out the conference and try to pass resolutions which are solutions to the problem written by each country. In this project I had to take on the role of Egypt and research what their position was in the Syrian Refugee Crisis as well as the Climate Change Crisis. When researching what we needed to know we had to write policy papers (as seen below) and resolutions in order to state what we would think would make a good resolution. When finishing all of this, we had to participate in our MUN conference, one about the Syrian Refugee Crisis and the other about Climate Change which was more professional. Ending up with passing two resolutions at the end of the conference, we had agreed to these two resolutions and were able to pose as professional delegates and solve a global issue.
How did you strengthen or not strengthen your skills?
How did you strengthen or not strengthen your skills?
How I think that I may have strengthened my skills in this project was to be able to learn how to write professionally and formally and in a way that the delegates from the United Nations write their policy papers or resolutions. Learning how to write formally through writing resolutions and policy papers, I did have a hard time the first time around. Seeing as I didn't do very well writing my first policy paper, I knew that seeing what I needed to work on when I was given my first policy paper back, I had learned how to take this feedback and put it into my policy paper number 2. This also goes for the resolutions that I have written. As I got more practice I became better at writing these papers by seeing how I could improve what I was writing.
How did this project change your way of thinking about global issues? What enduring understandings will you take away from the world and why?
How my perspective or my way of thinking had changed was in the beginning of this project I thought that what we were doing for this project was stupid, but while researching about the subject of Syrian Refugee Crisis I had learned how serious this issue was and what needed to be done and how the world could fix the multiple sub-problems in the global issue. In this I learned to see that the world was doing something for the refugees who were coming into their country for help and that some countries gratefully accepted them and helped them with their problems. Which made me see that people globally can work together in order to help someone else and that people actually want to help other people who are in need. Some enduring understandings that I would take away from this project would be that, like I stated before in the question above, would be that people are trying to fix things the best they can and are actually working towards trying to make a better world very slowly. For example, as the refugee crisis continues it is a fact that some countries are being open to the idea of welcoming the Syrian refugees with open arms. Learning this had changed my perspective on the world and it also made me think that there are some people who want many conflicts to be resolved and are working towards ending those problems.
